History

In 1995 a health survey was carried out on behalf of the Ore Valley Forum, and one of the results that local residents asked for, was a health advice centre. After a lot of hard work and determination the "Health and Social Care Centre" was created in an empty flat above the parade of shops in Malvern Way.
When Clare came into post she decided to hold a competition for local residents to come up with a more suitable name for the centre - and so the Oasis centre was named, this stands for Ore Advice Support Information Service. Oasis has certainly lived up to its name with offering individual support for residents, health drop in with Sue Talbot now with (Brenda Davidson), craft club, creche, University of Sussex (C.C.E.) courses, baby clinic, healthy eating club, benefit advice, job advice, care for the carers, first aid courses, cooking courses, college guidance, horizons meetings, information library, sign-posting, pop in coffee morning for older residents, information pack, newsletter, computer and photocopier use and meeting space. With all this going on in a little one bedroom flat, however did we manage.

In 1999 we moved premises to 42-44 Chiltern Drive, where we had the space of two one-bedroom flats. We continued to offer the same services, although the pop in and health drop in remained at the rent office, with Clare keeping fit running up and down the hill every Tuesday, while organising the A.D.H.D. group in the community centre.

In 2000 we moved again into the new Surestart building at 46-48 Chiltern Drive, in the top floor flat. The increase in space has meant that the role of Oasis has changed, we have passed on a lot of the services to other agencies that now reside in the block. Sussex University now has access to the training suite, where most of the courses will transfer to, the baby clinic will be run from the health visitors rooms and the creche's are being held in the new all purpose built facility on the ground floor.

Oasis continues to provide the information library, sign-posting, advocacy, pop in, newsletter, help with filling out forms, volunteer opportunities, job advice, benefit advice, craft group, community launderette, individual support, community garden, photocopier, information on committee skills and fundraising, information pack, meeting space, as well as being a rep and lending support to the R.S.O., Ore Valley Forum, Resident Associations, Social Regeneration Community group and Surestart. We hope that Surestart staff will support us by sending residents up stairs for friendly and informal advice.
We also plan to offer the befriending scheme for new residents, computer use with internet access, the touch screen health computer and support for the Federation of Community Flats.

Clare has moved on to a new job in St.Leonards her hard work, sense of humour, support and encouragement will be missed, Oasis would not be where it is today without her, I'm sure the Silchester Mews project will be just as successful, thanks Clare.
