Oasis Report

Oasis Report – 28th June 2002 We have had an increase in groups using the meeting space since the beginning of May including Smoking cessation, which has been very successful with most of participants giving up and receiving free patches and a certificate for showing restraint. Other courses have included Health & Hygiene, First Aid and Relate along with the long-standing groups o ADHD support, Community Snacks, Tomorrow’s People, Girls Group and Credit Union.

I have recently received funding bids to start “Extend” exercise classes, art & craft sessions for older Ore Valley residents along with cooking sessions bringing together older residents sharing their cooking skills with young people. I am investigating English classes for local Bengali families that have registered an interest to improve their communication skills. Classes may now be delayed until September so I have suggested that they may like to access some local summer outings while we wait for the classes meaning we can also take advantage of the new Surestart mini bus that arrived this week.

With summer eventually here, I have been arranging outings for the older residents of the Ore Valley. Last week we attended Paradise Park in Newhaven with 23 residents attending from this area meaning there were a few spaces on the coach, which I was pleased to be able to offer to 6 older residents who attend Silchester Mews. Outings still to be arranged include a tea dance in Eastbourne and the Kent and East Sussex train.

Young people have also been a focus, I continue to support Broomgrove After School Club and Broomgrove Play scheme and help each week at “Buzz” which is run from the Priory Neighbourhood Centre in Farley Bank, and works with youngsters aged 9 – 18 years. Activities have included filming, drumming, cooking and making large fish for the “Walking the fish” parade in a few weeks time.
Broomgrove Playscheme will be embarking on 4 summer outings this year, and due to an underspend from a funding pot I have been able to offer these outings to children from Farley Bank, and with gathering interest from the Over 50’s too there will truly be a mixed Ore Valley community on the coaches this year.

Our web site is currently being restructured and should provide better access to information from the Ore Valley.

Funding strategies are looking at the Befriending Scheme, new opportunities for groups, and community “Meals on wheels” service to link in with the Befriending service.
